Character Design

Character Design

For my final project I have been asked to design, manufacture and apply a full facial prosthetic make-up piece based on one of the following themes.

·         Ancient One

·         Demonic Nightmare

·         Strange Beauty

·         Industrial Oddity

·         Weird Beast

·         Metamorphosis

·         The Future

The one that has stood out to me the most is Demonic Nightmare. I think this is simply because for years I have watched and loved television programmes like “Charmed”, “Vampire Diaries”, “Walking Dead” and films like “Harry Potter”, “Lord of the Rings”, “Twilight” and many more. In each case they tend to have inhuman like creatures with great but demon like features.

Firstly I need to pick a model so I have decided on my Dad, who is in the Picture below.

When deciding on a model there is a lot to think about; will the design you want to achieve suit them; can they act the part of the character; are they reliable enough not let you down on assessment day? I have decided on my Dad to be my model for quite a few reasons:

·         He’s just over 6ft tall and well-built; perfect for a Demonic Nightmare Character.

·         He’s modelled for me before and always really enjoys it and is happy for me to make him into whatever character I want.

·         Reliable- I know he’ll be there on the face casting and the final assessment days and won’t cancel at the last minute.

When doing my research for my character design, I looked into examples of demonic creatures. I found this, which I really liked. The link to this is http://www.mythicalcreatureslist.com/mythical-creature/Demon

I then thought of a film I had once seen called “Beastly” and remembered the red veins the Beast had going through his skin and the tattoos he had all up his face and neck. The link to this is http://www.scenicreflections.com/media/520891/beastly_Wallpaper

I wanted my character to have a pointed bird like nose so I researched for pictures of owls and found this one http://kindawarped.com/?cat=1938

I also decided to draw an owl myself in search of further inspiration. This is the final drawing.

For the colouring around the eyes this picture of Lord Voldemort inspired me as it looks really dark and evil. The link to this picture is http://laurieleigh.deviantart.com/art/Voldemort-Doll-Art-Repaint-310844748

From doing this research I then started drawing out some ideas as shown below

This is the creation I finally decided on

Costume and Props

For the costume and props I imagined my character in a long black coat, black t-shirt and trousers and with smart shoes. I wanted my character to look dark and demonic but with a slight human feel to him. I then gave him a top hat, monocle and cane to finish my character a give him a Dark Lord appearance.

Face Chart

This is just a quick face chart to give an idea of what colours I would be using.
